  • A refurbished phone represents 176 pounds of our collective carbon footprint.

April 9, 2022 - New York, NY - To celebrate the launch of its new BuyBack program and build momentum heading into Earth Day, Back Market - a marketplace for expertly renewed tech - partnered with Zazzy's - a beloved, local New York City pizza shop - on Saturday, April 9 to host Slices for Devices, where they collected more than 300 pounds of electronic waste (e-waste) and served 1600 slices of pizza. This special event gave people a taste of Back Market's new online BuyBack program by enabling people to turn in old electronics for cash, pizza and prizes. The event drew local social media influencers Cugine, LIL “MO” MOZZARELLA and NY Nico who added a party atmosphere to the day.

"We wanted to make it easy and fun for New Yorkers to properly recycle their e-waste and see the value they could get from their old tech," said Lauren Benton, General Manager of Back Market. "We did that here today and plan to host an event again on Earth Day. On April 22 we will be at all three Zazzy's locations to collect e-waste and give away more hot cheesy slices."

Back Market plans to continue to promote similar events in the future to educate people on the environmental impact of technology and raise awareness for the value of refurbished electronics to help convince the world to stop thinking new is better.

E-waste is now the fastest-growing waste stream in the world - beating out fast fashion - and the most toxic, as reported by the World Economic Forum. Globally we generate e‑waste equivalent to 5,683 Eiffel Towers, enough to cover all of Manhattan. Yet, less than 20% of e-waste is properly recycled.

Back Market runs the world's largest online marketplace for expertly renewed tech, providing a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to buy electronics. Its mission is to make renewed an attractive alternative to buying new electronics in order to decrease the environmental impact of tech and create a robust circular economy. Back Market is constantly working to illustrate the impact of our tech consumption habits and demonstrate the value of refurbished as a more sustainable way to buy electronics.
